Mr. Rahman used to do a ritual
ablution before touching the
brush for any work, even before
rolling a cigarette. As he said
himself, this made a calligrapher
feel confident. At first I looked at
him, feeling sorry for him and
thinking that the old man quite
fancied himself; he thought that calligraphy on a banner was
an art form and probably he thought of himself as an artist
too. But later on, when I saw the original hand-made edition
of Baba Taher's verses in the handwriting of master Rahman
Zabihi Zamankhani on his dusty bookshelf, I realised that things
aren't what they seem and that I was to blame for my attitude.
I was often concerned more with people's appearance rather
than what was going on inside them and in their hearts.
